Holy Moments

Feel like you just washed up on the shore, like driftwood from 2024? Wondering how to pull yourself together for the next wave, 2025? I discovered a life buoy that might help in this new season.

I recently enjoyed a wonderful afternoon, three friends catching up after a year of losses, battles, upheavals. Ready to wrap up 2024 like a half-eaten biscuit and embrace this new season with excitement.

After laughing, growling, prepping for what’s next, we parted ways, basking in the bliss of being together. Being with friends you can cuss and spit with, as you help each other sift through the turbulence, knowing they will always have your back, always be there for you is time well spent. What we don’t often realize when we meet with good friends is that we are experiencing a holy moment.

A holy moment is where the Divine intersects the mundane. It’s often without our notice until something taps our spirit with an awakening, a focused lens of perspective and encounter. Such moments of epiphany, as a friend of mine says, have “the potential to change our lives.” Too often in our busyness, we don’t grab hold of these holy moments, or take time to sift, relish and explore what is quietly dropped in our lap of life.

During that afternoon of live entertainment, one friend, while rummaging through her purse looking for eyedrops, nonchalantly pulled out a book and offered it to me, continuing to groan because she couldn’t find the relief she needed in the bottom of that bag. I didn’t recognize the impact of that moment until a day later as I began to read.

Friend number two called later, lobbing a spiritual guidepost, an observation about me from scattered conversations. She laughed; I wept.

It took me a day of quiet to recognize the weight of the holy moment we all experienced. Three friends, frustrated, vulnerable, transparent, in the presence of another unseen visitor, Truth. We were too busy to notice, but Truth was present with us, dropping hints, encouraging us in silence, using our conversation of annoyances and summations to catapult us into a new time warp of 2025. Planting seeds that will root in stillness and time.

I am grateful to my friends, who allowed Truth to use them, whether aware or not. What a gift, a holy moment in the gathering of hearts, tears, pasta salad, avocado toast, chocolate chip cookies.

I am making a solemn promise on my leftover tuna that 2025 will be a year of holy moments. I’m going to slow down and relish the holy, whether I feel it or not.

I encourage you to make a promise too that 2025 will be your year of holy moments. Bring some friends to your favorite coffee shop, lay it all out on the table, sift through the seemingly mundane. Be present to relish those holy moments. Maybe we’ll end up at the same coffee shop and enjoy a holy moment together!
