A Prayer in Winter

Winter seems hard, Lord.

It’s dark, it’s cold. Often harsh.

Everything feels a lot harder to do. Harder to take.

Small hurdles that don’t seem like much in the summertime feel burdensome in the colder time of year.

But I want to praise You in all things. You created the seasons and winter’s majestic beauty.

Winter is not a season to lament or to focus on the harsh landscape.

It’s is a time to look for You, Lord. To see You in a new way.

On the surface everything looks dead. But I feel Your excitement as You gaze down to the roots of the trees, where they spread deep underground.

Exciting things are happening there. New life is bubbling up and will soon appear in flowers and the baby green leaves of spring.

Only You can bring such life out of darkness. Thank You, Lord, for the promise of new life. Not just in nature, but in each of us.

You’re here right now, Lord, even in winter’s coldest grip. You are filled with warmth and light.

You remind me that this is a time to rest, while You refresh and renew me.

It’s a time to draw close to You. To enjoy Your Presence. To see the brightness and warm glow that only You can bring to my heart.

Let winter be a time of joy, Lord. Of the peace of knowing You.

Help me to embrace You in the midst of whatever the snowstorms blow my way.

To see your glory and beauty in the winter landscape, Your beautiful handiwork.

Fill me with Your love, so I can shine Your light in a wintry world that needs to know You.

Thank You for wintertime, Lord. Thank You for being everything we will ever need.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen
